Before becoming a technology journalist, I served ISP and telecom customers at CoreComm in Cleveland, OH.
The CoreComm opportunity gave me experience with:
- Writing for the company Intranet and newsletter
- Enterprise software installation and testing
- AAA and email server monitoring
- ODBC setup
- Triple-boot computer systems
On leaving CoreComm I started writing for trade magazines and continued supporting my own SOHO as well as friends' home computers. This gave me experience with:
- Researching, pitching story ideas, self-marketing and networking
- Conducting background research and locating and interviewing appropriate experts
- Writing, meeting deadlines, editing and proofing galleys
as well as:
- SOHO networking
- Wireless networking
- PC troubleshooting and hardware installation
- Mobile hardware and software testing
I have always enjoyed writing. Computers finally dragged me away from my beginnings in social work and eventually introduced me to writing about technology.
I can say, though, that the experience and education I received in my former work--I earned a BA in psychology in 1993--have proven useful in researching, writing, persevering as a freelancer and relating to people.
I have satisfied editors with articles that brought increased readership, praise from all sides and repeat work. My network of contacts and opportunities continues to flourish as I move ahead.
There always seems to be some new writing gig waiting around the corner that's bigger and better than I could have imagined. Great new customers, colleagues and friends are waiting there, too. I'm excited, I'm ready and I'm grateful.
